Monday

I look like a lobster. At least the front half of me does. The back is still winter-white. I had intentions of baking my backside today, but the overcast weather did not permit that. I am however, currently enjoying the noisy birds outside through my open door. A flock of black birds appears to have taken up residence in our backyard. And I wonder what they are chirping about..... "Move over!" "I claimed this branch first!" "Who's that fat bird weighing down the branch?" "Move it, chubby!" "Who wants to torment some squirrels tonight?" Or something like that......

Today I realized that my days of relaxing while Lucas is awake are over. He is into everything. Or at least he wants to be. This afternoon, Lucas and I took a quick jaunt to the public library to fill my craving for a good novel. I checked out three books, Mary Higgins Clark "Nighttime is my Time", Sue Monk Kidd "The Mermaid Chair", and Nicholas Sparks "At First Sight". I am a novel junkie. I can go without books for a while, but suddenly a craving hits me and I can't put them down. If I'm not careful, I will spend my whole day reading and totally ignoring the piles of laundry and dishes around me. Don't worry -- Lucas is not neglected, just the chores. The books inspired me to take a rare trip to E-City Java for a Spiced Chai Latte. I had visions of snuggling in a cozy chair with the new Sparks book and latte, while Lucas plays quietly in his stoller. HA My active 6 month old very quickly let me know that he did not want to be strapped down, but instead wanted to grab at everything he could from Mommy's lap including her book and hot cup of yum. After ten, rather unpeaceful minutes, I packed up our stuff, put Lucas back into his stroller and headed for the car.

While Lucas was humming in the backseat, I realized while driving home, that I wasn't frustrated about having my plans interrupted. Sure I miss the pre-baby freedom to come and go as I please, but greater then that feeling is the knowledge that I have the awesome privilege of taking care of our son full time. And the feelings that come with that knowledge are deeper and richer then any good book or latte can bring.

8**sidenote*** Every Mom deserves and needs a break. So if you know a Mom, offer to watch her kids so that she can have some downtime. Moms work 24/7. Admitting that you need a break, doesn't mean you love your kids less; it just means that you want to be the best Mommy you can be.

I know what you mean. Sure, your days are more haphazard, but they are sweeter, too. Even when I do have time alone for "me," I soon realize that there's no where I'd rather go than to run straight back to my boy and husband. :) Yet another one of the paradoxes of motherhood.

Girl, I've been trying to let me give YOU a break so you can have an afternoon to yourself - bring it on, girl. ASK!!! Don't make me come over there and kidnap your child.... :)

Love you. :)

Baby steps

Guess what? I'm taking steps today to get just a little closer to my dream. We're off to the gym in a little bit to keep working towards losing those 38 pounds. I'm also working on a plan to sell specialty homemade cheesecakes during the holidays. Doing something I love and making some extra money for the people I love. Pretty great stuff!

Special K

I have developed a rather fond relationship with Kellogg's Special K Vanilla Almond. Low in fat (only 1.5 g) and made with whole grains, I eat this tasty treat as a meal and a snack. I'm eating some right now. Special thanks to Kat for introducing me to this delightful cereal. Our local Ingles has been running it on sale this past week, 2 for $4, so I stocked up. The milk is even on sale too, 2 for $5, making this treat yummy and affordable. Sweet, crispy flakes and crunchy almonds. What more could a girl ask for. By the way, you should go to Ingles. Everything is on sale. I picked up some lean ground beef today for $1.38 per pound. Now that's good for the budget. Low prices + good food = happy housewife

Let's go shopping at Aldi's!

If you're shopping at Aldi's this week, I recommend that you stock up on Eggs and Milk! Seriously, a dozen eggs for $1.09 and Milk for $2.19! The price of beef may have gone up, but I'm loving the other staples we get from a cow! I bought 4 dozen eggs this week. Overkill for sure, but when our family eats eggs, we usually eat 7 in one setting! Eggs and toast are a staple breakfast in our house - we eat that at least 4 times a week! It's fast and filling and cheap! If you're looking for something more exciting to do with your eggs, try making a breakfast casserole! I love this casserole from Ree, the Pioneer Woman. Everything she makes is delightful, but this recipe is especially great! As with most recipes, I tweaked it a bit to fit our tastes. For all of his perfect aspects, my handsome husband does not eat mushrooms. This could have been a deal breaker for me 13 years ago, but then I saw his drummer toned legs and I decided to look past his misjudgment! No ...
