Why is it that strangers love to offer baby/parenting advice? It's more than just a friendly gesture; it's like a compulsion or a need to impart wisdom to young, unsuspecting mothers. I encounter this alot when I'm out with my two little ones, especially at the grocery store. Usually I just smile and say something like "Oh, they're so wonderful" or "I'm so blessed" while I quickly push my cart, desperate to get away from the "parenting sage".
But the advice I got the other day at the grocery store ranks as the top WORST baby advice I've ever heard.
I was discussing Ava (one of my favorite topics) with the ladies behind me at the check-out counter. I was saying something like "She's a really great baby, always happy and a great sleeper" when the cashier decides to put her two-cents in. Here's what she asked:
"Want to know now to get your baby to sleep through the night?"
I'm thinking, "hey lady, did you not just hear my say that my totally freakin-awesome daughter sleeps 12 hours at night?" But instead, I politely nod and say "What?"
"Mix together a tablespoon each of peanut butter and jelly and put it on their tongue".
Uhh?? How do you even respond to that?
I was just about to say something like "I guess you aren't worried about peanut allergies" when the lady corrects herself (oh, good there is hope for her, I'm thinking.)
"Just don't use too much peanut butter or they will spit it up."
No, no hope for her at all.
That is by far,the WORST baby advice I've ever heard. And I thought the "put coffee in your baby's bottle to make them sleep (crash) at night" advice was number one.
I think there should be a test to pass, at least a common sense questionnaire, before someone is allowed to have a baby.
Wow.
